Good Comic Book Covers

With only a few days left till AwesomeCon, we had to focus on what is our arguably our most challenging Contest- Comic Book Covers.

So we asked our artists - what makes a great comic book cover?

Dennis Johnson (@DedlySweet)

When you are making a cover, you have to grab the attention of the viewer very quickly. You can remember tons of covers from Superman with the car over his head. [...] When you are creating that cover, you want to keep in mind the fundamentals of design- the focal point, the color choice, character placement, and what story you telling the viewer. You’re trying to convey a story in such a quick manner [so that] the viewers can say, “Ok! I see now…”

Let your comic cover tell a story. If you look at most comic covers, they are telling you a story before you get into the story. Use pure imagination when you are coming up with your cover art. Adding the fundamentals and techniques are great, but be sure to tap into your creativity. Be yourself when you are drawing and put in some of your personality, which is not like anyone else. This is sure to stand out and shine bright to the judges.

Have an open mind about the different covers and styles you have seen. I’m sure people have a vision for the stylized way they want their image to look. Tap into some of the things that you have and love, that pull you into a book just because of the Cover Art. Things like coloring and the positioning should be considered but do it in your on way. There are so many styles that Manga can be drawn, and this also goes for Comics. Tap into the diversity. Consider the style of art and how it was put together also consider the flow of the image from top to bottom or side to side.
