Fred Lynn Comic Con

With the first annual Fred Lynn Comic Con, students had the opportunity to interact with veteran artists, run their own artist tables, and cosplay on their own turf with their own terms. This middle school convention was full of unparalleled energy, creativity, and engagement. Scott Markley, Fred Lynn’s Coordinator and 8th Grade Physical Science Teacher, organized an incredible show.

It’s one thing to watch a YouTube video on how to do something. It’s a different experience to be in the same room with the people who produce animation for a living.
— Eric Suggs, Jr., President

Fred Lynn Comic Con utilized its space to provide events for everyone. The library hosted a Scholastic Book Fair fundraiser where participants could buy one book and get another for free. The Anime Trivia had middle schoolers and adults vying for points. One of our president’s favorite moment of the day had to be the panel hosted by Studio Flatland, an animation studio located in Richmond, Virginia. “They really opened my eyes,” says Eric Suggs, Jr. “I was very impressed with their work and learned their development process. It’s one thing to watch a YouTube video on how to do something. It’s a different experience to be in the same room with the people who produce animation for a living.”

Art Way Alliance’s panels also inspired. Our panels were well attended with high participation. In one panel, students described what gift they would want if they lived in the world of Encanto. The ideas presented were full of imagination and thoughtfulness that would make Mirabel proud.

We also can’t ignore the creative cosplays that we saw throughout the day. Ironically, one student stood out while dressed in ninja attire. “How often do get to come to school dressed as a Ninja?” With a deep sigh and even deeper voice, the young ninja responded, “Never, but I would love to do it again.” Eric fell out laughing not only at the student’s serious response, but also at how quickly he jumped back into drawing. Working with students - and watching them thrive in the accepting and encouraging space that Art Way Alliance facilitates - will always have a special place in our hearts.
