Farpoint 29

The sharp February air was not enough to keep the regulars (and us!) from Farpoint Sci-fi Convention in Hunts Valley, MD. Both attendants and guests expressed how happy they were to see the con return after a year long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “I always enjoyed how faithful this particular con's attendees are to the show, despite how ‘small’ the show is,” says Kurenai Kiba. “I have had people who have steadily bought from me every year I go and they actively look for you when you come back.”

Our own workshops and panels saw the same camaraderie and excitement. It was incredible watching friends and fans recapture the fellowship that you can only experience at a convention like Farpoint. “I think my Con moment came during Kurenai Kiba’s Character Design and Cosplay panel when one of the attendees [drew] a character for someone else in the room because [the recipient’s] mom said it was her daughter’s first Con and their birthday,” said AWA President Eric Suggs, Jr.

Kurenai Kiba agreed. “Those two were adorable.”

Such moments occurred throughout Farpoint. We can't express how happy we were to see everyone and show off workshops to old and new Art Way Alliance supporters. One new face was Violette Verse, a young cosplayer that loves to draw and interview creators. During our Sketch Card Design for Freelance Artists workshop, led by Darren Soto, Violette drew a picture of the robot mascot seen throughout our website and social media. We are impressed by her efforts in the pop culture community and support her journey into the Violet Verse. In addition, Violette informed us on Sunday afternoon that her cat gave birth to a litter of kittens in her parents’ car! Both mother and four kittens are doing well.

We honestly can't think of a better way to start the con season. Thank you so much to the organizers of Farpoint for having us!
